The Fundamentals

What Are Custom Velcro Patches?

Custom Velcro patches are fabric or PVC badges with a hook backing that fastens to a soft loop panel sewn or pressed onto a garment. The patch attaches in seconds, releases cleanly and reattaches without damaging the fabric. This hook-and-loop fastening system makes Velcro patches the standard choice for uniforms, equipment and apparel where names, ranks, logos or designs change regularly.

The mechanism has two sides. The hook side sits on the back of the patch and carries thousands of tiny stiff hooks moulded into a plastic substrate. The loop side sits on the garment and consists of soft polyester fibres looped into a dense pile. When the two surfaces press together, the hooks catch the loops and create a secure mechanical bond. Pull the patch away from one corner and the bond releases without tearing the fibres.

This fastening method belongs to a category called touch fasteners, originally invented by Swiss engineer George de Mestral in 1955 and trademarked as Velcro®. In patch manufacturing, “Velcro” has become the everyday term for any hook-and-loop backing, though strictly the trademark refers to one brand of the same fastening technology.

Custom Velcro patches differ from iron-on patches and sew-on patches in one critical attribute: reusability. Iron-on patches use heat-activated adhesive and are semi-permanent. Sew-on patches are permanent. Velcro patches are removable, washable and interchangeable, which is why they dominate sectors where uniforms must adapt quickly to new roles, ranks or branding.

The Hook-and-Loop System

Hook Side (on the patch)

Thousands of small stiff hooks moulded into a rigid plastic mesh. Bonded to the back of every Velcro patch.

Loop Side (on the garment)

Soft polyester fibres looped into a dense pile. Stitched or pressed onto the uniform, jacket or gear.

Touch Fastener Technology

Invented 1955 by George de Mestral. Reusable, removable, washable, built for uniforms that change.

Patch Construction

Types of Custom Velcro Patches We Make

We produce six types of custom Velcro patches in the UK, each suited to a different design, finish and end use. The patch type determines the level of detail, the texture, the weather resistance and the final cost per unit.

Embroidered Velcro patch

Embroidered Velcro Patches

Most Popular

The most popular type and the industry standard for uniforms, jackets and club apparel. The design is stitched into a twill fabric base using high-density polyester thread, then bonded to a hook backing. A merrow border wraps the edge with an overlocked stitch, or a laser-cut border gives a precise die-cut finish for custom shapes. Embroidered patches deliver a textured, premium look that survives repeated washing and outdoor wear. Typical stitch count starts at 1,500 stitches per design.

  • Best for Military uniforms, workwear, sports clubs, biker jackets, charity branding
  • Finish Textured, classic
  • Detail level Medium to high
PVC rubber Velcro patch

PVC (Rubber) Velcro Patches

Tactical

Moulded from soft, flexible polyvinyl chloride and fused to a hook backing. The material is fully waterproof, UV-stable and resistant to abrasion, chemicals and extreme temperatures. PVC patches reproduce sharp edges, fine lines and 3D relief that embroidery cannot match. Designs can be 2D flat, 2D bordered, or 3D raised with multiple depth layers.

  • Best for Tactical gear, outdoor equipment, military operations, marine and emergency services
  • Finish Soft rubber, 2D or 3D
  • Detail level Very high
  • Weather Waterproof and UV-stable
Woven Velcro patch

Woven Velcro Patches

Fine Detail

Produced on a loom rather than embroidered with thread. Fine polyester yarns weave the design directly into the fabric, allowing for thinner profiles, smaller text and higher detail than embroidery. The surface stays smooth and flat rather than textured. Woven patches suit small logos, intricate typography and gradient-style colour blends.

  • Best for Small corporate logos, name labels, fashion brands, fine-detail crests
  • Finish Smooth, thin profile
  • Detail level Very high, supports text down to 4pt
Printed sublimation Velcro patch

Printed (Sublimation) Velcro Patches

Full Colour

Use dye-sublimation to transfer full-colour artwork onto a polyester base, then bond to a hook backing. The process reproduces photographs, gradients, and unlimited colour counts with no thread or mould limits. Print resolution stays sharp, the surface stays smooth and the patch stays lightweight.

  • Best for Event branding, promotional patches, photographic designs, complex multi-colour artwork
  • Finish Smooth, photo-quality
  • Detail level Photo-realistic
Leather Velcro patch

Leather Velcro Patches

Premium

Use genuine or vegan leather as the base material, with the design embossed, debossed or laser-engraved into the surface. A hook backing fuses to the rear. The result is a premium, tactile patch that ages well and signals craftsmanship.

  • Best for Premium fashion labels, heritage workwear brands, motorcycle apparel, corporate gifts
  • Finish Embossed or debossed leather
  • Detail level Medium, best for logos and wordmarks rather than fine illustration
Chenille Velcro patch

Chenille Velcro Patches

Varsity

Use yarn loops to create a raised, velvet-like texture, traditionally associated with varsity letters and vintage sportswear. The chenille body is bonded to a hook backing for removable use on jackets, hoodies and bags.

  • Best for Varsity jackets, school letterman pieces, retro sports clubs, fashion patches
  • Finish Raised, fluffy yarn texture
  • Detail level Low to medium, ideal for bold letters and simple shapes

The Mechanism

How Hook-and-Loop Backing Works

The strength of a Velcro patch comes from the pairing between two surfaces: the hook backing on the patch and the loop panel on the garment. Neither side works on its own. Understanding this two-part system helps you choose the right backing specification when ordering custom Velcro patches.

The hook side carries thousands of small stiff hooks moulded into a rigid plastic mesh. The loop side carries soft, dense fibres looped into a fabric pile. When the two surfaces press together, the hooks catch the loops and create a mechanical bond that holds firm under tension but releases cleanly when peeled from one corner. The bond resists pull-apart forces but releases under peel forces, this is what makes the system repeatable.

Single Velcro Backing vs Double Velcro Backing

Standard

Single Velcro BackingHook backing on patch only

The hook material is fused directly to the back of the patch. This is the standard option, the most cost-effective, and the right choice for the vast majority of orders. The patch attaches to any loop panel sewn onto a garment.

Best for: Garments with loop panel already fitted (most military and workwear uniforms)

Sew-On vs Adhesive Loop Panels

Light Use

Adhesive Loop PanelsHeat-activated or pressure-sensitive glue

Use a strong heat-activated or pressure-sensitive adhesive on the back of the loop material. They press on with an iron or commercial heat press. Adhesive panels suit temporary applications, light-use items, and garments that are not washed frequently. For long-term, heavy-duty use, stitching outperforms adhesive.

Best for: Temporary branding, promotional items, items not washed often

For UK military, police, security and workwear use, sewn loop panels are the standard. We recommend the same for any commercial or club uniform that goes through regular laundering.

Who We Serve

Custom Velcro Patches by Industry & Use Case

Custom Velcro patches serve a wide range of UK sectors where uniforms, gear and apparel need flexible, removable branding or identification. Below are the most common use cases we manufacture for across the United Kingdom.

Military & Cadet Velcro Patches

The standard identification system for British armed forces, cadet units and reserve regiments. The hook-and-loop fastening allows soldiers to change name tapes, rank slides, unit flashes and morale patches without replacing the uniform. We produce embroidered and PVC Velcro patches for British Army, Royal Navy, RAF, Royal Marines, Army Cadet Force (ACF), Combined Cadet Force (CCF), Sea Cadets, Air Cadets, and BFPO-served units overseas. Designs include unit insignia, regimental crests, name tapes, blood-type patches, IR (infrared) patches, and Union Jack flag patches in subdued, full-colour or multicam variants.

Police, Security & Emergency Services Patches

Police and emergency services Velcro patches identify roles, ranks, departments and divisions on operational uniforms across the UK. Officers swap patches between shifts, training and operational duties without changing tunics. We produce custom Velcro patches for police forces, private security firms, close protection teams, fire and rescue services, ambulance crews, mountain rescue, lifeboat volunteers and search-and-rescue units. Patches typically include force crests, rank insignia, “POLICE” identifiers, qualification badges and reflective IR variants for tactical wear.

Workwear & Corporate Branding Patches

Workwear Velcro patches give UK businesses a removable, washable branding option for uniforms, hi-vis jackets, polo shirts, fleeces, coveralls and softshells. Logos, names and role identifiers swap between staff without re-ordering whole garments. Construction firms, logistics companies, security contractors, hospitality teams, engineering crews and trades businesses use custom Velcro patches for fast on-boarding and consistent brand presentation. Pantone colour matching keeps the logo on-brand across every uniform.

School, Scout & Cadet Group Patches

School Velcro patches give head teachers, prefects, sports captains, house leaders and visiting staff removable identification on blazers, jumpers and PE kit. Scout and Guide groups use Velcro patches for badges, group identifiers, county flashes and event commemoratives, particularly when badges need to move between camp uniforms and ceremonial wear. We supply UK schools, sixth-form colleges, Scouts UK groups, Girlguiding UK units and university societies with embroidered and woven Velcro patches at low minimum orders.

Sports Club & Motorcycle Club Patches

Sports club Velcro patches give amateur teams, supporters’ clubs and member organisations a way to brand kit, training tops, club blazers and supporters’ jackets without committing to permanent stitching. Motorcycle club (MC) patches, including back patches, side rockers, chest patches and event patches, use Velcro backing when riders want to switch between leathers, denim cuts and textile jackets. Rugby clubs, football academies, cycling teams, motorcycle clubs and shooting clubs across the UK order custom Velcro patches for kit, club blazers and event merchandise.

Morale & Tactical Velcro Patches

Morale patches are humorous, slogan-based or unit-specific Velcro patches worn on tactical gear, plate carriers, range bags, caps and operator jackets. The tradition started in military and law-enforcement circles and has spread to airsoft, mil-sim, EDC (everyday carry), and outdoor communities across the UK. Morale patches use PVC, embroidered or printed construction depending on the design. Common formats include flag patches, IR identifiers, blood-type tabs, call-sign tapes and custom unit humour pieces.

Common Questions

Custom Velcro Patches: Frequently Asked Questions

Are Velcro patches washable?
Yes, custom Velcro patches are machine washable up to 40°C when the loop panel is sewn onto the garment. Embroidered, PVC and woven Velcro patches all retain their grip strength, colour and shape through repeated washing. For best longevity, remove the patch from the loop panel before washing heavy-soil garments, and avoid tumble drying PVC patches at high heat.
Do I need a loop panel on my garment?
Yes, every Velcro patch requires a matching loop panel stitched or pressed onto the garment for the hook backing to fasten to. Many military, police and workwear uniforms come with loop panels already fitted. For civilian garments without a loop panel, order double Velcro backing and we supply a matching loop panel sized to your patch.
What is the minimum order for custom Velcro patches?
The minimum order for custom Velcro patches is 10 pieces. This applies to all patch types, embroidered, PVC, woven, printed, leather and chenille. Larger orders reduce the unit price; bulk quantities of 100, 500 or 1,000 pieces attract progressive discounts.
How long does UK delivery take?
Standard production takes 10 to 14 working days, and tracked Royal Mail delivery adds 1 to 2 working days. Express production cuts manufacturing time to 5 to 7 working days for urgent orders. Delivery covers England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and BFPO military addresses worldwide.
Can you Pantone-match my brand colours?
Yes, we Pantone-match embroidery thread, PVC mould and print colours to your exact PMS codes at no additional cost. Send your brand colour codes with your artwork and we confirm matched samples on the digital proof before production begins.
Are Velcro patches better than iron-on patches?
Velcro patches are better when the badge needs to be removable, swapped frequently or washed at high temperatures. Iron-on patches are better when permanence, lower cost and minimal garment preparation matter more than flexibility. For uniforms with changing names, ranks or roles, Velcro is the stronger choice; for one-off decoration of a single jacket, iron-on is often enough.
What is the difference between hook side and loop side?
The hook side is the rough, stiff surface attached to the back of the patch, and the loop side is the soft, fibrous surface attached to the garment. The two surfaces press together to form a secure bond and pull apart for removal. By industry convention, the patch carries the hook backing and the garment carries the loop panel.
Can I order a single Velcro patch?
Yes, we accept sample orders of one to five pieces for design verification, though the per-unit price is highest at this quantity. Most customers order a sample first, then place the main run of 10+ pieces once the design is confirmed.
Do you supply patches for BFPO addresses?
Yes, we deliver custom Velcro patches to British Forces Post Office (BFPO) addresses for serving military personnel on operations and posted overseas. BFPO delivery uses Royal Mail’s military postal service and tracking is provided on dispatch.
